Project sheet A

Photovoltaic solar generation plants

Context
Photovoltaic plant connected to the National Interconnected Electric System.
Challenge
Interconnect inverters, weather station, control house and evacuation substation across extensive terrain, with high electromagnetic interference and exposure to lightning.
Scope
  • Single-mode fiber optic backbone in a ring topology between transformer stations
  • Underground ducting and aerial installation of ADSS cable
  • Fusion splices and optical distribution frames
  • Industrial switches with extended temperature range
  • Backup radio link to the control center
  • Integration with the plant’s SCADA platform
Outcome
Redundant communication between generation and the control center, with continuous telemetry and availability verified in acceptance tests.

Project sheet B

Mining operations

Context
Mining operation with moving work fronts, a processing plant and a camp.
Challenge
Keep field personnel, mobile equipment and the control center in contact on changing terrain, where fixed infrastructure cannot always keep up with the advance of the operation.
Scope
  • Point-to-point and point-to-multipoint radio links between the plant, the pit and the camp
  • UHF radio system with repeater stations and a coverage study
  • Radio-over-IP gateways that integrate the repeaters with the data network and the dispatch console
  • Self-supporting and guyed towers with a grounding system and lightning protection
  • Fiber optics in the plant area
Outcome
A single voice system across work fronts, the plant and the control room, with coverage verified in the field.

Project sheet C

Electrical substations

Context
Transmission or distribution substation and its link to the control center.
Challenge
Carry protection, control and telemetry data in a high-voltage environment, where copper is not viable because of electromagnetic interference and ground potential rise.
Scope
  • OPGW fiber optic interconnection over transmission lines and interface with ADSS cable
  • Splice closures and optical distribution frames in the control house
  • Indoor fiber between switchgear bays, panels and the control room
  • Radio link as an alternate path
  • Integration with substation automation protocols
  • Radio over IP to connect yard personnel with the control center
Outcome
Link immune to electromagnetic interference between the substation and the control center, with an independent alternate path.

Cross-cutting technical scope.

The working method we apply on every project, from up-front engineering to closeout.

Up-front engineering
  • Site survey and assessment of existing infrastructure
  • Line-of-sight study and terrain profile for each radio link
  • Link budget calculation with a defined fade margin
  • Radio coverage study and frequency plan
  • Detailed engineering: fiber routes, tower locations, communications single-line diagrams
Fiber optic installation
  • ADSS aerial cable laying, OPGW interface and underground ducting
  • Fusion splices, splice closures, optical distribution frames and organizers
  • Bidirectional OTDR certification of each link, with insertion loss and return loss measurement
  • Delivery of the certification traces as part of the project file
Radio link and radio installation
  • Tower assembly, antenna installation and alignment
  • Grounding system and lightning protection
  • Equipment configuration and link capacity, latency and stability tests
  • Installation of UHF repeaters, radio-over-IP gateways and dispatch console
  • Coverage testing along a route in the field
Industrial environment conditions
  • Industrial-temperature-rated equipment and cabinets with a protection rating suited to the environment
  • DC power backup and uninterruptible power systems
  • Electromagnetic compatibility considerations in high-voltage yards
  • Protection against dust, humidity and salt air depending on the location
Safety and compliance
  • Personnel certified in work at height, tower climbing and tower rescue
  • Task-level risk analysis and work permits coordinated with the client
  • Compliance with site safety procedures, including lockout and tagout at energized facilities
Project closeout
  • On-site acceptance tests with the client
  • As-built drawings and documentation
  • Training for operations personnel
  • Warranty and preventive maintenance plan
